Fondant Fancying

I have just been told off  by my sister in Lyon for neglecting my blog, and rightly so! I know it is the same for all of us but time has just flown by, after a busy summer season providing Afternoon Tea, dinners and the tons of Flapjack to fuel the ascents and of course the long descents of  our lovely mountains here in Switzerland by the clients of Martin Moran. ( "Tons" may be a slight exaggeration but I certainly used up 10 litres of golden syrup and more than 25kg of oats)

It was great to see John win The Great British Bake Off last night but I did feel sorry for Brendan after seeing his softer side last night. And it seems everyone watching was willing those little sponges to stay on the ends of the forks as they were dunked into the pink icing. " Why don't they just pour the icing over them?" said some of us ( interestingly, the men) It was interesting that they all went for the dunking method and it was slightly disappointing that we didn't get to find out the correct way to do it, the recipe for Fondant Fancies is not included in my copy of Mary Berry's Baking Bible.

Back in this kitchen thoughts are turning towards the approach of Christmas and the baking of the Rich Fruit Chrismas Cakes which traditionally starts during late October to allow the cakes to mature. This year I have sourced a supply of super fat juicy raisins and currants so I have high hopes for even better results than usual!

The details of the Christmas Cakes will be on the website very soon and the prices remain the same as last year. Please place your order by the 5th November to avoid disappointment.

My latest Afternoon Tea testing took place at that icon of Britishness, Fortnum and Mason. The whole experience was wonderful as you would expect but my companions, who happened to be my companions from the QM2 trip, and I all agreed that the scones were not nearly as good as those served as we were making our way across the Atlantic.

While back in England I stocked up on delicious and pretty decorations for the Simple and Fun Cupcakes, the most frequently ordered cakes on the website. So now when you order a box of  standard or mini cupcakes you can expect an even wider variety of toppings to delight children and adults alike!
